Canva Design Size Guide for Printables, Wall Art, Cards, and Labels
Choosing a Canva template is easy.
Choosing the correct size before you begin designing is where things get more complicated.
A printable planner may need to work on both A4 and US Letter paper. Wall art may need several aspect ratios. A folded card requires a different canvas from a flat card. A product label needs to fit a physical container, not just look attractive on a screen.
That is why I do not treat canvas size as a final export setting.
I treat it as part of the product structure.
This Canva design size guide will help you choose practical dimensions for printables, wall art, cards, labels, and other print-based products. You will also learn when to use inches, millimeters, centimeters, or pixels—and how to avoid the sizing mistakes that usually appear after a design is finished.

The Quick Canva Design Size Guide
Here are the most useful starting sizes for common design projects:
| Product | Recommended Canva Size | Best Unit |
|---|---|---|
| A4 printable | 210 × 297 mm | mm |
| US Letter printable | 8.5 × 11 in | inches |
| A5 printable | 148 × 210 mm | mm |
| Half Letter printable | 5.5 × 8.5 in | inches |
| 5 × 7 wall art | 5 × 7 in | inches |
| 8 × 10 wall art | 8 × 10 in | inches |
| 11 × 14 wall art | 11 × 14 in | inches |
| 16 × 20 wall art | 16 × 20 in | inches |
| Standard invitation | 5 × 7 in | inches |
| A6 card | 105 × 148 mm | mm |
| US business card | 3.5 × 2 in | inches |
| Square card | 5 × 5 in | inches |
| Product label | Based on container | mm or inches |
| Digital-only graphic | Based on platform | pixels |
These are starting points, not universal rules.
The correct size still depends on three things:
- Where the design will be used.
- How it will be printed.
- Whether the buyer needs one size or several compatible formats.
Canva also maintains an official design size guide covering document, paper, and digital formats. Its paper references include A-series and North American sizes.
Understand the Four Parts of Canva Sizing
Before entering any numbers, it helps to separate four ideas that are often mixed together.
1. Physical dimensions
Physical dimensions describe the final printed size.
Examples include:
- 8 × 10 inches
- 210 × 297 millimeters
- 5 × 7 inches
- 50 × 70 centimeters
Use physical units when you are creating something that will be printed at a specific size.
This includes planners, cards, wall art, labels, menus, worksheets, and packaging inserts.
2. Pixel dimensions
Pixels describe the digital dimensions of a file.
For example:
- 1500 × 2100 px
- 2400 × 3000 px
- 2550 × 3300 px
Pixels matter when you are creating digital graphics or preparing raster artwork at a specific output resolution.
However, a large pixel count does not automatically mean the design will print at every size.
A 2400 × 3000 px file can produce an 8 × 10-inch print at 300 pixels per inch. The same file can be printed larger, but the effective resolution becomes lower.
3. Aspect ratio
Aspect ratio describes the relationship between width and height.
An 8 × 10-inch design has a 4:5 ratio. A 12 × 18-inch design has a 2:3 ratio. Both can be enlarged or reduced within their own ratio families without changing the composition.
This matters most for wall art.
It also matters when turning one design into multiple cards, posters, or product listing images.
4. Bleed and safe space
Bleed is the extra artwork extending beyond the final trim edge.
Safe space is the area inside the design where important text and logos should remain.
These are different zones.
Background colors and images may extend into the bleed. Names, dates, instructions, and logos should stay comfortably inside the trim line.
Canva provides margin, bleed, and crop-mark controls for print projects. When downloading a print-ready file, Canva’s official workflow uses PDF Print with the Crop marks and bleed option where required.

How to Create a Custom Size in Canva
You do not need to rely on Canva’s template names.
A custom canvas gives you more control, especially when you are making products for a specific printer or marketplace.
Step 1: Confirm the final product size
Do this before opening the editor.
Check:
- Final width
- Final height
- Portrait or landscape orientation
- Flat or folded format
- Required bleed
- Printer template requirements
- Whether the product needs multiple size versions
Do not assume that “standard card,” “planner page,” or “label” means the same size everywhere.
Step 2: Choose the most useful unit
Use:
- Millimeters for ISO paper sizes and precise labels
- Inches for US print products and framed wall art
- Centimeters for larger metric-format posters
- Pixels for digital-only graphics
Canva’s custom-size workflow lets you choose units such as pixels, inches, millimeters, and centimeters. From the homepage, you can select Create, choose Custom size, and enter your dimensions.
Step 3: Enter width and height carefully
For portrait orientation, the height should be greater than the width.
For landscape orientation, the width should be greater than the height.
For example:
- Portrait A4: 210 × 297 mm
- Landscape A4: 297 × 210 mm
- Portrait 5 × 7 card: 5 × 7 in
- Landscape 5 × 7 card: 7 × 5 in
A simple reversal can change the entire layout.
Step 4: Create the design
Select Create new design and confirm the canvas dimensions before adding content.
I recommend naming the file with its size immediately.
For example:
- Weekly Planner – A4
- Weekly Planner – US Letter
- Botanical Print – 4×5 Ratio
- Candle Label – 70×45 mm
- Wedding Invitation – 5×7 Front
Clear names become much more useful when your project contains several versions.
Step 5: Set up margins and guides
Add guides for:
- Trim area
- Safe text area
- Binding margin
- Fold line
- Label seam
- Hole-punch space
- Important alignment points
A guide system makes resizing easier later because the structure is visible.
Canva Sizes for Printable Planners and Worksheets
Printables are often sold as if A4 and US Letter are interchangeable.
They are not.
A4 measures 210 × 297 mm. US Letter measures 8.5 × 11 inches, or approximately 215.9 × 279.4 mm. A4 is narrower and taller. US Letter is wider and shorter. Canva’s official paper references list these as separate formats.
That difference can affect:
- Writing space
- Page margins
- Footer placement
- Decorative borders
- Binding allowances
- Page count
- Text wrapping
Recommended printable sizes
| Printable Format | Canva Dimensions | Approximate Pixels at 300 PPI |
|---|---|---|
| A4 | 210 × 297 mm | 2480 × 3508 px |
| US Letter | 8.5 × 11 in | 2550 × 3300 px |
| A5 | 148 × 210 mm | 1748 × 2480 px |
| Half Letter | 5.5 × 8.5 in | 1650 × 2550 px |
| A6 | 105 × 148 mm | 1240 × 1748 px |
| 5 × 7 in | 5 × 7 in | 1500 × 2100 px |
The pixel figures above are calculated reference values. For print products, I still prefer creating the Canva document in inches or millimeters rather than building it in pixels.
A4 printables
A4 works well for:
- Worksheets
- Educational pages
- Business planners
- Habit trackers
- Journaling pages
- European and international markets
It gives you slightly more vertical room than US Letter.
This can be useful for long prompts, schedules, and multi-section worksheets.
US Letter printables
US Letter is a practical choice for:
- North American buyers
- Home printing
- Teacher resources
- Business forms
- Printable planners
- Activity sheets
Because it is wider than A4, a layout that fits perfectly on US Letter may feel compressed when moved to A4.
A5 printables
A5 is useful for:
- Compact journals
- Planner inserts
- Reflection pages
- Reading logs
- Small workbooks
- Binder products
The smaller page changes how much content feels comfortable.
Do not simply shrink an A4 page to A5.
Headings may become too large relative to the page. Body text may become too small. Writing areas may lose their usefulness.
A better method is to create a dedicated A5 layout with fewer prompts and stronger spacing.
Half Letter printables
Half Letter is popular for small binders and portable planners.
It measures 5.5 × 8.5 inches.
Although it feels similar to A5, the proportions are different. A5 is slightly narrower and taller.
A combined “A5 and Half Letter” product should contain two separate files rather than one file with two labels.

Add a Binder Margin Before You Design
Binder products need more than an ordinary page margin.
The punched side loses usable space.
For a single-sided planner, you can create a larger inside margin on the left. For double-sided pages, the binding margin needs to alternate between left and right pages.
A typical structure might include:
- 0.5-inch outside margin
- 0.75-inch inside or binding margin
- Additional space for large ring mechanisms
These are design starting points only. Always test the actual binder or punch system.
This is one of the reasons mockup-only testing is risky. A planner may look balanced on a floating page mockup but feel crowded after holes are punched.
Canva Wall Art Sizes: Start With Ratios
Wall art should not begin with a random list of frame sizes.
It should begin with aspect-ratio families.
This creates a cleaner product system.
2:3 ratio
Common sizes include:
- 4 × 6 in
- 8 × 12 in
- 12 × 18 in
- 16 × 24 in
- 20 × 30 in
- 24 × 36 in
This ratio is tall and works well for photography, typography posters, and statement artwork.
3:4 ratio
Common sizes include:
- 6 × 8 in
- 9 × 12 in
- 12 × 16 in
- 15 × 20 in
- 18 × 24 in
This ratio feels slightly wider than 2:3.
It is a useful middle ground for illustrations and decorative prints.
4:5 ratio
Common sizes include:
- 4 × 5 in
- 8 × 10 in
- 12 × 15 in
- 16 × 20 in
- 20 × 25 in
This ratio works especially well for quote art, portraits, and compositions with a strong central focus.
5:7 ratio
Common sizes include:
- 5 × 7 in
- 10 × 14 in
- 15 × 21 in
- 20 × 28 in
The 5 × 7 format is familiar and gift-friendly, but it does not match 4:5 or 2:3.
It usually needs its own composition.
11:14 ratio
Common sizes include:
- 11 × 14 in
- 22 × 28 in
This is another separate ratio that buyers often expect.
ISO A-series ratio
The A-series includes:
- A5
- A4
- A3
- A2
- A1
These paper sizes maintain the same proportional relationship as they scale. Canva lists A4 as 21 × 29.7 cm, A3 as 29.7 × 42 cm, A2 as 42 × 59.4 cm, and A1 as 59.4 × 84.1 cm.
Build one master composition for each ratio
Suppose you sell one botanical quote print.
Instead of manually making fifteen unrelated sizes, create these master canvases:
- 2:3 ratio
- 3:4 ratio
- 4:5 ratio
- 5:7 ratio
- 11:14 ratio
- ISO A-series ratio
You can then export or scale each master into its compatible sizes.
This is faster.
It also keeps the crop intentional.

Do Not Stretch One Wall Art File Into Every Size
Stretching changes the proportions of the artwork.
Cropping may remove borders, illustrations, signatures, or important spacing.
Adding blank bars can make the design feel unfinished.
The better approach is to adapt the composition.
For example:
- Move the title slightly higher on a tall 2:3 version.
- Increase side spacing on a wider 4:5 version.
- Reposition illustrations on the A-series version.
- Reduce decorative borders on the 5:7 version.
The design should feel native to every ratio.
It should not look like the same file forced into a different frame.
Large Wall Art and Pixel Limits
Large wall art can become more demanding because pixel dimensions increase quickly.
At 300 PPI:
| Print Size | Pixel Dimensions |
|---|---|
| 8 × 10 in | 2400 × 3000 px |
| 11 × 14 in | 3300 × 4200 px |
| 12 × 18 in | 3600 × 5400 px |
| 16 × 20 in | 4800 × 6000 px |
| 18 × 24 in | 5400 × 7200 px |
| 24 × 36 in | 7200 × 10800 px |
A typography-based PDF can scale more cleanly than a design containing low-resolution photographs or raster textures.
Inspect every photo, painted texture, and imported illustration at the intended output size.
A large canvas cannot repair a small source image.
Canva Sizes for Invitations and Flat Cards
Cards become easier to size when you first decide whether the product is flat or folded.
Standard 5 × 7-inch invitation
A 5 × 7-inch canvas is a practical choice for:
- Wedding invitations
- Birthday invitations
- Save-the-date cards
- Baby shower cards
- Event announcements
- Premium printable cards
It gives you enough room for hierarchy without making the card feel oversized.
Canva’s invitation reference includes several card formats, including the A7 or Lee format at approximately 5.13 × 7 inches. Exact envelope and printer standards may differ, so confirm the specification before production.
A6 card
An A6 card measures 105 × 148 mm.
It works well for:
- Thank-you cards
- Small invitations
- Postcards
- Recipe cards
- Quote cards
- Packaging inserts
A6 is especially useful when your product family already uses A-series paper.
4 × 6-inch card
The 4 × 6-inch format works well for:
- Photo cards
- Postcards
- Mini prints
- Product inserts
- Simple announcements
It is compact and easy to print.
However, it has less room for long event details.
Square cards
Useful square sizes include:
- 4 × 4 in
- 5 × 5 in
- 5.5 × 5.5 in
- 6 × 6 in
Square cards feel distinctive, but they may need special envelopes or postage arrangements.
Do not choose square sizing only because it looks attractive in a mockup.
Check the full delivery process.

How to Size a Folded Card
A folded card canvas normally represents the unfolded sheet.
For a finished 5 × 7-inch card with a side fold, the flat design may need to be 10 × 7 inches.
That gives you:
- 5 × 7-inch back panel
- 5 × 7-inch front panel
- Vertical fold at the center
For a top-fold card, the flat canvas may instead be 5 × 14 inches.
The page structure depends on the fold direction.
Add a guide at the fold line. Keep text and small decorative details away from it.
Also check which panel becomes the front after folding. It is surprisingly easy to design the correct size with the panels in the wrong order.
Business Card Sizes in Canva
Business card dimensions vary by country.
The standard US and Canadian size is 3.5 × 2 inches. Several European countries commonly use approximately 3.35 × 2.17 inches, while other regions use slightly different dimensions. Canva’s size guide recommends checking the standard used in the country where the card will be printed or distributed.
For a business card, confirm:
- Finished trim size
- Bleed requirement
- Corner style
- Orientation
- Front and back
- Safe area
- Printer template
A logo that looks comfortably spaced on the screen may sit too close to the edge after trimming.
Canva Label Sizes: Measure the Product First
Labels are not like wall art or standard paper.
The physical object controls the design.
Before creating the Canva canvas, measure:
- Available flat area
- Container width
- Container height
- Curved surface
- Lid diameter
- Label seam
- Tapered edges
- Existing packaging details
Canva’s label guide also recommends measuring the item first and testing the proposed dimensions against the object. Its reference sizes include examples such as 3.5 × 4-inch wine labels and 8 × 2-inch bottle labels, but these should be treated as examples rather than universal product standards.
Common label starting sizes
| Label Type | Possible Starting Size |
|---|---|
| Small jar label | 2 × 2 in |
| Candle front label | 2.5 × 3 in |
| Cosmetic bottle label | 40 × 60 mm |
| Soap label | 2 × 3 in |
| Thank-you sticker | 2 × 2 in |
| Address label | 2.625 × 1 in |
| Water bottle wrap | Based on bottle circumference |
| Box seal | 30–50 mm circle |
| Hang tag | 50 × 90 mm |
These are planning examples.
Your printer’s dieline or the actual container measurement should take priority.

How to Measure a Front Label
For a simple front label:
- Identify the flattest visible area.
- Measure the maximum width.
- Measure the maximum height.
- Reduce the size slightly to create breathing room.
- Cut a paper sample.
- Place it on the container.
- Check it from the front and both sides.
A label may technically fit but still look too large.
The container needs visible space around it.
That empty space helps the product feel more polished.
How to Measure a Wraparound Label
For a cylindrical container, measure the circumference with flexible measuring tape or a paper strip.
Then decide whether the label should:
- Wrap completely
- Leave a small seam gap
- Overlap slightly
- Cover only the front and sides
A practical formula is:
Label width = usable circumference minus seam gap
For example, if the usable circumference is 210 mm and you want a 4 mm gap:
210 mm − 4 mm = 206 mm label width
Next, measure the available vertical height.
Create the Canva canvas using those exact dimensions.
Mark the front-facing zone with guides. This helps you keep the logo and product name visible while secondary information wraps around the sides or back.
Design for the Cutting Shape, Not Only the Canvas
A circular sticker may be designed on a square canvas.
An arched label may be supplied inside a rectangular artboard.
A custom die-cut label may have irregular edges.
In these cases, the canvas boundary and cutting boundary are not the same.
Use a temporary cutting-shape guide while designing. Keep important information inside the safe zone. Remove any non-printing guide elements before export unless the printer asks for them.
Always request a dieline for unusual packaging.
Do not recreate a complex cutting shape from a product photo.
When to Use Canva Resize or Magic Switch
Canva’s resizing features are useful when you need to adapt an existing design to another format. Canva currently describes Magic Switch as a tool that can resize one design into multiple sizes and formats.
However, resizing is not the same as finishing.
After resizing, review:
- Line breaks
- Font sizes
- Image crops
- Margins
- Element spacing
- Writing areas
- Border thickness
- Fold placement
- Binding space
- Decorative balance
A 5 × 7 invitation resized to a square card will probably need a new text arrangement.
An A4 planner resized to A5 may need fewer prompts.
A 4:5 wall print resized to 2:3 will need vertical rebalancing.
Use automatic resizing as a starting point. Treat the result as a new layout that still needs design decisions.

Build a Master File Without Making It Too Generic
A master file can speed up your workflow.
But it should not become one crowded layout trying to work for every product.
A better system separates fixed elements from flexible elements.
Fixed elements
These remain consistent:
- Color palette
- Font pairing
- Heading style
- Icon style
- Border language
- Illustration style
- Brand details
Flexible elements
These may change between sizes:
- Line breaks
- Image crop
- Prompt count
- Writing area
- Decorative position
- Margin width
- Font size
- Page orientation
This gives you consistency without forcing every format to look identical.
Canva Export Settings for Print Products
Once the size and layout are correct, choose an export format that matches the product.
PDF Print
Use PDF Print for:
- Printable planners
- Worksheets
- Invitations
- Cards
- Labels
- Wall art intended for printing
- Multi-page products
Canva states that PDF Print provides a higher-resolution option for printing and supports crop marks and bleed.
PDF Standard or digital PDF
Use a lighter PDF option for:
- Screen viewing
- Email delivery
- Digital guides
- Reference documents
- Files where print quality is not the priority
PNG
PNG is useful for:
- Transparent-background elements
- Digital stickers
- Product graphics
- Individual design assets
- High-quality web previews
JPG
JPG works well for:
- Listing images
- Mockups
- Digital previews
- Photo-heavy graphics
- Files where a smaller size is useful
For printable products, do not use a listing JPG as the customer’s master print file unless that is an intentional product decision.
Should You Add Crop Marks?
Add crop marks when:
- Your professional printer asks for them.
- The design will be printed on larger paper and trimmed.
- The final product uses full-bleed artwork.
- The production workflow specifically requires them.
Avoid crop marks when:
- The customer will print at home on the same paper size.
- The printer asks for artwork without marks.
- The file is already set to the exact sheet size.
- The marks could confuse the buyer.
More print settings do not automatically create a better file.
The export should match the production method.
A Practical Sizing Workflow
Here is the workflow I recommend for most Canva print products:
1. Define the final use
Decide whether the product is for home printing, professional printing, framing, binding, folding, packaging, or digital viewing.
2. Confirm the physical object or paper
Choose the paper, frame, envelope, binder, bottle, jar, box, or label stock.
3. Get the technical requirements
Collect the final trim size, bleed, safe area, fold, hole position, and printer instructions.
4. Choose the master format
Decide whether the master should use inches, millimeters, centimeters, or pixels.
5. Build the layout system
Create guides, margins, text hierarchy, and content zones.
6. Add real content
Do not test with short placeholder text only.
Use realistic names, dates, prompts, instructions, ingredients, or product descriptions.
7. Create size variations
Adapt the composition for each paper size or ratio.
8. Print at actual size
Use 100% or Actual Size in the print dialog.
Avoid automatic Fit to Page unless scaling is intentional.
9. Test the physical result
Write on the planner. Fold the card. Frame the print. Apply the label. Punch the binder page.
10. Export and package the files
Use clear filenames and organize formats into folders.

Common Canva Design Size Mistakes
Choosing a template before choosing the product
A visually attractive template may use the wrong proportions.
Start with the output requirement.
Then find or build a layout that fits it.
Designing A4 and renaming it US Letter
Changing the filename does not change the dimensions.
Create a real US Letter version.
Using one wall art ratio for every frame
This causes stretching, awkward cropping, or inconsistent borders.
Create separate master ratios.
Shrinking a planner without redesigning it
Small text and narrow writing areas make the product less useful.
Reduce content before reducing readability.
Ignoring fold and binding space
A normal centered layout may become off-center after folding, punching, or binding.
Design for the finished object.
Using rounded dimensions for labels
A label that is 70 × 45 mm should not be created as “about 3 × 2 inches.”
Small measurement differences matter on packaging.
Approving the design through a mockup only
Mockups show presentation.
They do not test text size, cutting accuracy, writing comfort, folds, seams, or printer behavior.
Exporting before checking the page size
Open the downloaded PDF and inspect its page dimensions before delivery.
A beautiful file at the wrong size is still the wrong file.
Canva Design Size Guide FAQ
What size should I use for a printable in Canva?
Use A4 at 210 × 297 mm for many international markets and US Letter at 8.5 × 11 inches for North American home printing. Offering both formats gives buyers a more practical product.
Should I create Canva printables in pixels or inches?
Use inches or millimeters when the final product has a physical print size. Use pixels mainly for digital-only graphics or when a platform provides exact pixel requirements.
What Canva size should I use for wall art?
Create wall art by aspect-ratio family. Useful master ratios include 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 5:7, 11:14, and ISO A-series.
What is the best Canva size for an invitation?
A 5 × 7-inch flat card is a practical starting size. A6 at 105 × 148 mm is another useful option. Confirm the envelope and printer requirements before finalizing the file.
What is the best size for Canva labels?
There is no single best label size. Measure the actual container or use the printer’s dieline. Create the Canva canvas using the exact final dimensions.
Can I resize a finished Canva design?
Yes. Canva provides resize features, including Magic Switch for eligible plans and workflows. Still, every resized version should be reviewed and adjusted manually because text flow, image crops, margins, and spacing may change.
Should I include bleed in my Canva print file?
Include bleed when artwork reaches the trim edge and your printer requires it. Keep important text inside the safe area, extend background artwork beyond the trim, and download using the printer’s requested PDF settings.
Is PDF Print better than JPG for printables?
PDF Print is usually the more practical master format for printable documents, cards, and multi-page products. JPG can still be useful for flattened art prints or customer preview images.
Final Thoughts
The right Canva size is not simply the largest canvas you can create.
It is the canvas that matches the final product.
A useful printable needs the correct paper size. Wall art needs intentional aspect ratios. Cards need envelope and fold planning. Labels need real container measurements.
Once the size is correct, typography and layout become much easier to control.
You can then build a product family instead of repairing mismatched files one by one.
